A fine ivory Okimono, carved from a solid tusk, of Kinko holding a scroll in one hand, and a staff in the other, whilst seated on a large carp above the waves. With hardwood fitted stand. A brilliant detailed work, by a master craftsman, with a good deal of undercutting to form the waves.

Ivory mounted in enamelled silver (chrysanthemum design) to form a base, handles, and a silver filigree lid. The ivory is decorated in fine Shibyama work depicting a phoenix, with flowers, and prunus on one side. A pair of quail watched by a bird, on a tree laden with blossom, above flowering chrysanthemum plants.

Lacquer, deep-red, embellished with mother-of-pearl, coral, malachite and horn and painted with gold and multicoloured lacquer to create the scene of children at play in a garden, with an elegant lady standing in front of a large screen, with a stork standing in water below; the reverse with two children making tea.

At some point in the late 19th Century Japanese workshops began to expand their repertoire to include snuff bottles. This was due to the demand from Western collectors and this example is typical of the work produced.

A guri Lacquer and metal pendant, snuff bottle (also a netsuke) in the form of a double gourd.  Carved over all with cloud scrolls to show the red and black layers.

This piece forms a good link between all these collections as it could have been used as a netsuke, a snuff bottle, a pendant and it is also lacquer.  Guri Lacquer was first used by the Chinese, but it was later also used by the Japanese!

A fine Japanese carved ostrich egg. Well carved making use of all three colours, the thinnest inner layer is white, the middle layer is grey/blue, and the outer shell is a mottled brown. On one side four swimming carp are cameo carved from only the inner white and grey layers. On the other side flowering iris are engraved through all three layers.
