About These Collections

Most of my parent's collection was formed between the early 1950's and mid 1970's.

Trudy and I started our own collection in the early 1970's with my father's guidance, but rather than continueing to collect the same as my parents, we decided to concentrate on lacquer boxes and jade carvings (my parents had stopped adding jade carvings by then).

We continued collecting seriously until the late 1980's, having created the Zodiac netsuke collection, but we had diversyfied into other areas, collecting Chinese snuff bottles (our first snuff bottle was Putai Ho-Shang (B25) purchased from Estelle Chapman in 1973) and later on the very rare Chinese Pendants.

After 1990 we only added the odd piece, the criteria being that it had to really impress us as being exceptional.  So, very few were added between 1990 and 1999.  But our very last purchase was in 1999 when we purchased from Robert Hall a wonderful snuff bottle 'The Pearl, Sky and Sea Dragons' (B26)

The original CD-Rom of 'THE COHEN COLLECTION' no longer works with the latest Windows, or Apple Mac computers. So I decided to convert it all to this website.  A huge task as well over 8,000 files are involved!

I have also included my late Father's book 'IN SEARCH OF NETSUKE AND INRO' by George Cohen as it has been out of print for a good number of years.

Most pieces of these collections have been sold and the remaining items have been shared amongst the family.  For the strange auction room results and values have a look at Auctions and Values.

This should all now be Mobile friendly, but please do email me if you find any problems using this website, or if you have any suggestions to make it easier to use. Email John

In Search of Netsuke & Inro

Quite a number of pieces in this collection were also included in this attractive publication

by

George A. Cohen.

An important private collection consisting of 280 selected netsuke in ivory and wood together with 76 choice inro - all complete with ojime and netsuke - as well as several fine lacquer boxes, are all individually described and reproduced, nearly life size, within the 32 full page colour plates.

Originally described as: -
The connoisseur will appreciate the excellent work of several 18th century master carvers as well as that of more recent artists. This book differs from most other studies, as it is not purely technical, although it contains useful and practical information. In the hope of attracting new enthusiasts the author has written an entertaining account of his personal experiences in forming this collection, relating many amusing incidents as well as describing the pleasure and satisfaction to be enjoyed by those who collect these elusive miniatures of Japanese art. An introduction was written by Douglas J.K.Wright.

This Book (now out of print) was published in the UK by 'The Jacey Group of Companies' in 1974.
